One of the rookie cops wounded by a maniac with a hatchet was released from the hospital Friday amid revelations that the suspect had been "ranting about America" before he attacked. But the encouraging report that Officer Joseph Meeker was on the mend was tempered by revelations from sources that a bystander hit by police gunfire that stopped the brutal attack attack might be paralyzed.

"The Italian Supreme Court of Justice found Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana not guilty of tax evasion," a company press release said. In April an Italian appeals court had upheld a guilty verdict against Dolce and Gabbana for evading taxes totalling 200 million euros ($277 million).

During his lengthy career De la Renta was known for his sophisticated suits with fitted jackets, feminine dresses in pastel colors and flowered prints, and elaborate evening gowns. In April, an appeals court gave a suspended sentence of 18 months in jail to the designers, who have always denied the charges. The suit stems from an investigation that began in 2008 when Italian authorities stepped up their fight against tax evasion as the global financial crisis began to bite. Fashion groups have come under tax authorities' scrutiny in Italy partly because they performed better than most other sectors during the financial crisis, but the cases rarely come to court.

Former US first lady Laura Bush has led tributes to Oscar de la Renta, the worldly gentleman designer who shaped the wardrobe of socialites and Hollywood stars for more than 40 years. Oscar, 82, died at his home in Connecticut surrounded by family and friends and "more than a few dogs", his stepdaughter Eliza Reed Bolen and her husband Alex Bolen said.
